I said in last week’s notes that we would need to up our game considerably from our quarter final performance if we were to beat Tubberclair, and that we duly did in Mullingar on Saturday evening. A good workmanlike performance from start to finish sees us into the Intermediate final on 5th October. Despite missing several scoring chances we went in at the break two ahead, 6 points to 4. In what was a low scoring game, a goal was always going to be crucial and it came within 10 minutes of the restart. An excellent long punt out of defence by Shane Tone found Theo Watts who flicked to the on-running David Tone. He in turn made up the yards and put the ball low to the left, out of Garry Connaughton’s reach. Positives from the game was the work put in by all the lads, but especially the backline. In the ‘Must do Better’ category has to be our shooting. A vast improvement in this area will be required to beat either Caulry or Tang, who replay their drawn match on Friday evening. Team: Eoin Carberry, Shane Tone, Eamon Boland, Luke Kelly, Andy McCormack, Darren King, Boidu Sayeh(0-2), Enda Boland, TJ. Fox, Theo Watts(0-1), James Geoghegan, DD McCormack, Danny Fielding(0-2), Dude McCormack(0-2), David Tone(1-1). Subs used: Paddy Boland for TJ Fox, Cathal Daly(0-1) for D. Fielding, Declan Mullen for J. Geoghegan, David Malynn for DD. McCormack, David Fox for T. Watts.

Our intermediate team qualified for the semi-final of the Intermediate championship, with a hard fought and well-earned performance in Mullingar on Sunday. Two goals in the opening half from DD McCormack gave us some breathing space at the break. Milltownpass came back at us in the second half and some stout defending was required to keep our noses in front. We now meet Tubberclair in the semi in two weeks time. Another step up in performance will be definitely be required if we are to clear this hurdle.
Ladies County Final
Well done to Moate Ladies on winning the Intermediate title in Athlone on Saturday week defeating Ballycomoyle by the narrowest of margins. They now go on to play Leinster club championship against Wexford this Saturday and more importantly, will be playing senior football next year.
Commiserations but well done to their minor team, who put in a Trojan effort but lost out to Rochfordbridge by two points in the semi-final in Tubber on Sunday.

Our final group game of championship ended with comfortable win over Ballinagore in Moate on Saturday evening. David (Dude) McCormack marked his return with a goal after seven minutes to give us a lead that would not be relinquished. The bulk of our points came from David Tone and Danny Fileding, five apiece. This result means we finished top of the table with Tang, (ahead on score difference) but they take the semi-final spot due to their head-to-head win). We now meet Milltownpass who finished third in their group. Team: Eoin Carberry, Shane Tone, Eamon Boland, Luke Kelly, Andy McCormack, Enda Boland(0-1), Boidu Sayeh(0-2), Theo Watts(0-1) Stephen Darcy, TJ. Fox(0-2) James Geoghegan, DD McCormack(1-0)David Tone(0-5) ,Dude McCormack(1-1)Danny Fielding(0-5). Subs used: Damien Boland for L. Kelly, Padraig Fox for E. Boland, David Malynn for S. Darcy, Brian Clarke for J. Geoghegan.

We had to give second best to a very strong and balanced Tubberclair side on Tuesday in the park. However, our lads gave a very commendable performance and were always in the game right up to the final minutes. First half goals from David Fox and Cathal Daly ensured a one point deficit at the break, 2-1 to 8 points. The visitors kept up the momentum in the second period. An Andy McCormack goal was cancelled out by county player, Alan Coffey, who had been kept under wraps till then by Darren King. One wonders what if our county man, Dude McCormack had been available?
Team: Darren O' Connell, Damien Carroll, Darren King, Dylan Hassett, Damien Boland, Boidu Sayeh, Paugie Fox, Andy McCormack, Theo Watts, Cathal Daly, Daniel Boland, Danny Digan, David Fox,TJ. Fox, Aran Farrell.

It was Tang who came away with both points from our top of the table clash in Rochfordbridge on Saturday last. We struggled in almost every area of the field against a very determined Tang side. With both teams defending in numbers in miserable wet conditions, it made for a very dour affair. In the end the difference between the teams was Tang's ability to shoot for points at the earliest opportunity. We wish Declan Mullen a speedy recovery from a facial injury picked up after a clash of heads midway through the second half.
Team: Eoin Carberry, Damien Carroll, Eamon Boland, Luke Kelly, Shane Tone, James Geoghegan, Darren King, Declan Mullen(1-2), Enda Boland(0-1), Andy McCormack, TJ. Fox, David Malynn(0-1), David Tone, DD McCormack, Theo Watts. Subs used: David Fox for D.Tone, Stephen Darcy for A. McCormack, Cathal Daly for T. Watts, Daniel Boland for D. Malynn, Daniel Fielding for D. Mullen.
Our u21s have a very difficult assignment tomorrow night in the park when they take on Tubberclair in the next round.
Tubberclair accounted for St Lomans with relative ease in the last game.
5th Aug 2014
Our u21s had their first outing of 2014 with a well deserved win over Caulry on Sunday morning in the park. After a very close contest the sides couldn't be separated within the hour, scoring 1-9 apiece. In extra time the home side took the game to the visitors outscoring them 7 points to 2.
Team: Darren O' Connell, Damien Carroll, Boidu Sayeh, Tommy Longworth, Damien Boland, Darren King, Paugie Fox, Andy McCormack(0-1), Daniel Boland(0-1), Cathal Daly, Theo Watts(1-1), Danny Digan(0-1) David Fox(0-5),TJ. We picked up another two points in the championship by virtue of an eight point win over Ballynacargy in Tang on Sunday last. While Bal raised as many flags as ourselves, fortunately for us four of them were green. David Tone put the first underneath the keeper after only two minutes while Declan Mullen added another after twenty, when he fisted a rebound to the net. Were it not for the woodwork and two fine saves by Bal keeper Richie Price, it could have been a lot more than the 2-3 to two points at the break. Early in the second half, Theo Watts went on one of his trade-mark runs and while he appeared to lose control of the ball, did enough to toe poke it to the net. Bal had the better of the second half exchanges, scoring six points and forcing Eoin Carberry into making three excellent saves. Declan Mullen extended the lead with his second goal with ten minutes remaining.
Team: Eoin Carberry, Damien Carroll, Eamon Boland, Luke Kelly, Boidu Sayeh, James Geoghegan, Darren King, Declan Mullen(2-1), Enda Boland, Theo Watts(1-0) Andy McCormack, David Malynn, David Tone(1-0) DD McCormack, David Fox(0-1). Subs used: TJ. Fox for B. Sayeh, Cathal Daly for D.Tone, Danny Fielding(0-1) for D. Fox, Stephen Darcy for T. Watts, John Keenan for D. Mullen

We made it a welcome maximum points from two games by overcoming Ballymore in Rochfortbridge on Saturday evening last. The weather had behaved itself right up to the throw-in but then we were treated to a dangerous lightning storm and a continuous downpour for all of the first half. We coped much better with the conditions, with a point each from David Tone, Boidu Sayeh, David Malynn and 3 from Declan Mullen(2 frees) to lead 6 points to 2 at the break. However, the wide count was racking up. The second half points came from Andy McCormack(2), David Malynn, David Tone and substitute David Fox. While it may not have been a classic we did enough, to pick up a valuable two points. Next up, Ballynacargy in Tang on Sunday next at 6pm. Team: Eoin Carberry, Damien Carroll, Eamon Boland, Luke Kelly, Boidu Sayeh(0-1), James Geoghegan, Darren King, Declan Mullen(0-3), Enda Boland, Andy McCormack(0-2), Theo Watts, TJ. Fox, David Malynn(0-2), DD McCormack, David Tone(0-2). Subs used: David Fox for TJ. Fox. Cathal Daly for T.Watts.
Many thanks to all who helped out at the staging of two championship games in the park on Sunday morning last. Special thanks to Johnny Kelly for allowing us the use of his field. Moate Ladies have expressed their gratitude to all who supported them at their fundraising cake stall at these games.
15th July 2014
Our second championship game is against Ballymore and is fixed for this coming Saturday at 6pm in Rochfordbridge. Having beaten Ballynacargy in their opening game, Ballymore will have every right to fancy their chances here. However it will be important for us to build on our opening game and keep the momentum going. Best of luck to Frank and the lads. Our game is followed at 7.30 by Tubberclair v Milltownpass.
We are due to host two intermediate championship games this Sunday. Ballynacargy play Tang at 12noon while Caulry take on St Marys, Rchfortbridge at 1.30pm. We would appreciate the help of as many stewards as possible for these two matches, which are likely to attract a big crowd. Moate Ladies, who cater for the footballing needs of all the local girls, will providing refreshments at these games and your support will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks to all who helped out or took part in our 5K fun run on Friday last. Your support was greatly appreciated.

We had an easier than expected passage through the first round of the championship on Tuesday evening with a comfortable win over Castletown-Finea-Coole-Whitehall. We were 1-2 ahead after just five minutes with Andrew McCormack finishing a series of good passing movements to the net. DD McCormack and David Malynn also netted before the break to leave the half time score, 3-6 to 2 points. Two more goals followed in the second period from DD McCormack and David Tone. The general consensus was ‘A good performance but much more serious challenges lie ahead’. Team: Eoin Carberry, Damien Carroll, Eamon Boland, Luke Kelly, Paddy Boland, Darren King, Boidu Sayeh, Declan Mullen (0-4), Enda Boland(0-1), David Malynn(1-1), Theo Watts(0-2), Andy McCormack(1-0), David Tone(1-4), DD McCormack(2-0), David Fox. Much like our game on Tuesday night, a goal on the final whistle decided the issue, except that today, we were already a point behind and chasing the game. We started very strong with four unanswered points, but Shandona got to grips with the game and were on level terms at the break, 5 apiece. We had problems in the second half translating possession into scores and were reduced to three points from placed balls by Declan Mullen. The visitors for their part, had the stronger finish and were one to the good before hitting the net, to leave them four ahead at the end. With the Championship only two weeks away, there’s some work to be done if we are to overcome the intermediate champions of two ago.

St Malachy’s 1-10
A goal two minutes into injury time denied us a deserving two points from this home game with St Malachy’s on Tuesday last. Instead we had to settle for a share of the spoils, after a highly entertaining game, with never more than three points between the sides. Both sides fielded without a number of regulars but it didn’t take from the entertainment value. Having held our own against a senior outfit, we trailed by just two at the break, 8 points to 6. We increased the tempo in the second period, profiting from a number of poor kickouts by the visitors. As full time approached we were 3 ahead and looked to have done enough, despite wasting a number of scoring chances. St. Malachys however had the final say with just their third score of the half on the final whistle. Good to see Theo Watts making his return after a long injury layoff. Team: Darren O’Connell, Damien Carroll, Richie O’Brien, Boidu Sayeh, Andy McCormack, Darren King, Dylan Hassett, Declan Mullen(0-6), Enda Boland(0-1), David Malynn(0-2), DD McCormack, Daniel Boland(0-1) Danny Fielding(0-1),Dude McCormack(0-1), David Fox(0-1). Rosemount started this game brightly in perfect conditions in Castledaly on Sunday morning, with three unanswered points from David Tone. Paddy Holloway then pounced for a goal to level the sides after ten minutes. Declan Mullen put us back in front with a free but almost immediately, Paul Kelly goaled for the home side. Having done most of the hard work and playing well we still found ourselves trailing by two at the break, 2-1 to 5 points. When Kelly pounced for his second goal midway through the second half we were seven in arrears. But the lads put in a fine final quarter and a great move from end-to-end saw David Tone palm to the net, for the goal of the game. Another point brought us to within three before Dude McCormack’s pile driver skimmed inches over the bar to leave just two between the sides at the finish. This was an excellent game of football where both sides will most likely be satisfied with the outcome.
Team: Eoin Carberry, Damien Carroll, Eamon Boland, Patrick Boland, Boidu Sayeh, Enda Boland, Dylan Hassett, Declan Mullen(0-1), Dude McCormack(0-2), David Malynn(0-1), James Geoghegan, Andy McCormack, David Tone(1-4), DD McCormack(0-2), TJ. St Marys 2-11
We made it two wins from two on Saturday last, with a hard earned win away to St Mary’s Rochfordbridge. Declan Mullen opened the scoring when he ran through from the throw in, and his pile-driver could well have been under instead of over the bar. The goal did come a few minutes later when James Geoghegan was put through for a one on one with the keeper, after some excellent work by TJ Fox. The home side pounced for a goal on fifteen minutes, latching onto a loose ball that we failed to clear. Further points from Declan Mullen(2), David Tone(2), Darren King, Andy McCormack and a goal from David Malynn left us six ahead at the break, 2-7 to 1-4. James Geoghegan palmed a ball to the net on the resumption, after some fine support play and a series of hand passes from the halfback line. The goal of the game came from the home side when the Mary’s full forward, shot from thirty yards, with his shot dipping into the top corner. Points from Declan Mullen, David Malynn, David Tone and Brian Clarke left the final score 3-12 to 2-11. Despite having the lion’s share of possession throughout, we failed to make enough of it count, with some wayward kicking and a pass too many. On the plus side, the support play was excellent and we had a very assured performance from our youngest member Damien Carroll. Team: Darren O’Connell, Damien Carroll, Eamon Boland, Luke Kelly, Darren King(0-1), Patrick Boland, Declan Mullen(0-5), Enda Boland, T.J. Fox, James Geoghegan(2-0), David Malynn(1-1), Andy McCormack(0-1), David Tone(0-3), Brian Clarke(0-1). Sub used: Emmet Heavin for D. Hassett.

24th March 2014
Our first team got their league off to a winning start, with a comfortable win over a disappointing C.F.C.W side in the park on Saturday. 1-2 apiece from the McCormack brothers, Andy and David, within 15 minutes left the visitors with a mountain to climb. By the break the score was 2-7 to 6 points. With the visitors failing to score in the second half, one wonders what they can produce when we meet them in the championship later in the year - A whole different ballgame one suspects. Team: Eoin Carberry(0-1), Dylan Hassett, Luke Kelly, Damien Carroll, Darren King, Eamon Boland, Boidu Sayeh, Enda Boland, Paddy McCormack, Andy McCormack(1-3), David Tone(0-2), David Malynn(0-1), Brian Clarke(0-1), Dude McCormack(1-2), David Fox(0-2). Subs used: TJ. Fox for D.Tone, Damien Boland for P. McCormack, Cathal Daly for D. Fox, Paddy Keenan for B. Sayeh.

National Football League Division 1 - 2014
You will already be aware Westmeath will be hosting the top 3 teams in Ireland in Division 1 of the National Football League 2014 for our home matches at Cusack Park Mullingar, Dublin on Feb 9th Mayo on March 9th and Kerry on March 30th. As part of an initiative to increase support for Westmeath Footballers the Westmeath Football Committee are sending out 100 tickets to all Football Clubs for those upcoming matches.
This campaign was run last season for our home Division 2 league games and proved very popular with over 400 tickets being returned. Some clubs put their full support behind the project but it was also very noticeable at these matches that some clubs had not distributed the tickets as U16 from their clubs approached the personnel looking after this project wondering why they had not received tickets. Parents of those attending were extremely grateful that this initiative was in place but a sizable number of parents also highlighted that they had not been informed of this initative by their clubs.
I therefore ask that all clubs actively distribute these tickets and inform your members and players through your Club text system, your weekly notes in the Local Papers and most importantly through the schools adjacent to all you clubs.
The Football Committee and team management will use all available media opportunities to make the wider Westmeath community aware of this information. I urge all clubs to please get behind the Westmeath Football Team for 2014 and help us to get out support for the team that they so richly deserve.

We defeated Ballinagore in the final round of the championship on Sunday in Moate, to end up with 5 points on the table. Unfortunately it was a dead rubber game, as Tang ended our hopes of a knockout spot, with a victory over St Marys earlier in the day.

Hard luck to Cathal, Darragh and Westmeath U16s, who lost out to Offaly in the replay of the Fr Manning Cup. Congrats to Sandra, Michelle and their Westmeath side, in their All-Ireland final replay on Saturday where they overcame Limerick.

U16 All-IRELAND FINAL - Replay
Best of luck to Rosemount girls Michelle King and Sandra Nestor in their U16 All-Ireland Ladies final against Limerick on Saturday 31st Aug.
It was shoulders to the wheel time in Tubberclair on Saturday as we avoided a possible relegation battle later in the year. With a good hard-working effort we managed to see off Tang with a 3 point win. We started brightly and were two points to the good after twelve minutes when Tang made their first foray up field and netted after a questionable number of steps. We responded immediately when DD McCormack was first to the ball and side footed to the net from twenty yards. Another goal from David Tone left us five ahead at the break, 2-4 to 1-2, having played with a strong breeze. Some strange tactics from the restart saw us with up to eleven players in our own half for the third quarter, during which time we failed to score, while Tang reduced the deficit to a point. Returning to a more conventional formation saw us tack on two more points and live out some very anxious final minutes. Our final group game is against Ballinagore on Sunday the 1st Sep in Moate by which time we’ll know if there is still an unlikely quarter final place left to play for.
Team: Eoin Carberry, Dylan Hassett, Darren King, TJ. Fox, Shane Tone, Andrew McCormack, Paddy Boland, Declan Mullen(0-2), David (Dude) McCormack, David Mullen, Stephen Darcy, David Malynn(0-1), David Tone(1-2), David (DD) McCormack(1-0), Danny Digan(0-1).Subs used: Eamon Boland for D.Hassett, Paddy McCormack for D. Digan, Brian Clarke for S. Darcy.

Minor Championship: Rosemount play Culrly in the Minor Championship on Wed 21st Aug in Rosemount. We wish all of our team members who are out trough injury a speedy recovery
U16 championship: Our U16 put in a splendid performance tonight against a strong Kilbeggan/St Josephs team to win this U 16 Championship by 2.15 to 1.7 . Rosemount fought all the way and despite Kilbeggan /St Josephs gaining the upper hand with a Goal and two points either side of half, and the loss of Cathal Daly through injury early in the second half this appeared to give more determination to this very young squad . We hope the injury to Cathal is not too serious and we wish him speedy recovery.
Div 2 Championship: Rosemount lads worked very hard to win this Div 2 Championship game against St Lomans who had home advantage last week. The final Score Rosemount 2.11 to St Lomans 1.9
Fr Manning Cup Final: Well done to Cathal Daly and Darragh Healy who were part of the Westmeath U 16 team which drew with Offaly in the Fr Manning Cup Final in Longford on Wednesday last. Both club members were also on the team that won the Gerry O’Reilly Shield in Oldcastle on Saturday last. We also had a number of Rosemount ladies in action with Westmeath over the weekend. Well done to all our club members.
Kerry Connection: Some of you may have noticed the No 11 Kerry Minor last Sunday when they were beaten by Tyrone in the All Ireland Quarter Final. Jack Savage scored 1.8 (He also scored 10 points the previous week in the Munster final getting “Man of the Match”) Well why wouldn’t he with his Rosemount connections!!. His Great Grand Father was the legendary Rosemount and Westmeath footballer Jack Carberry. His grand Aunt Jo wasn’t half proud of him and why wouldn’t she.(rumour has it that transfer papers are been sought by Jo)

29th July 2013
We lost out to table toppers Caulry on Sunday evening in what turned out to be a much closer affair than many were predicting. The loss of Boidu, who was having an excellent debut, with a serious injury fifteen minutes in, didn’t help our cause. With some excellent points from David McCormack, David Tone and Declan Mullen we found ourselves a point to the good at half time, 6 points to 5. Caulry regained the lead on the resumption and looked the more likely winners during the second period. In fact were it not for balls taken off the line by keeper Eoin Carberry and Darren King the game might have been up earlier. The goal eventually came with seven minutes remaining. An unkind bounce deceived our man of the match, Eamon Boland and left Caulry in on goal. Paddy McCormack did see his goal chance skim the outside of the post nearing full time. Discipline was again an issue with our third red card in as many games. The rule book would appear to have been fairly applied with a red card for a striking offence. However, when you compare it with the yellow that was issued for the tackle that left Boidu hospitalised it beggars belief. The gaa have some serious questions to answer when it comes what is deemed to be a ‘fair shoulder’.
Team: Eoin Carberry, Luke Kelly, Eamon Boland, Boidu Sayeh, Shane Tone, Paddy Boland, Darren King, Stephen Darcy, Declan Mullen(0-3), David Malynn, David(Dude) McCormack(0-2), David Mullen, David Tone(0-3), David MaCormack(DD), James Geoghegan, Subs used: TJ Fox for Boidu Sayeh, Paddy McCormack for Stephen Darcy, Arran Farrell for David Mullen.
We wish Boidu and Theo a speedy recovery from their injuries. Both had been putting in sterling performances for the county minors and their loss could well put paid to our chances of progressing in the competition. We wish our remaining survivor, Andy and the Westmeath minors all the best against Mayo in Tullamore on Monday next.

Despite the best efforts of our clubmen Andy McCormack and Boidu Sayeh both of whom acquitted them very well, Westmeath were not strong enough for Kildare in the Leinster minor final at Croke Park yesterday. Had our 3rd club member Theo Watt not been out through injury it would have improved our chances but Kildare had a much stronger panel. Well done to our 3 lads for their commitment throughout the year and the experience of playing Croke Park will stand to them in the next round

We believe Declan is the first Hand Cyclist to complete this trip -well done to Declan and the lads. We picked up our first, badly needed points in division2 in Killucan on Sunday morning. This was a much improved performance on recent outings, showing what we can do when we put our minds to it. Granted, the home side were minus some players who were in county hurling action the previous day. Our midfield duo of Declan and David held the upper hand in the possession stakes throughout. We led 12 points to 3 at the break having played with a strong wind. Having spurned a number of goal chances early in the game, the goal eventually came with 10 minutes remaining courtesy of Declan Mullen. A left footed, thirty yard drive gave the keeper no chance.
Team: Eoin Carberry,Padraig Fox, Eamon Boland, TJ Fox, Darren King, Paddy McCormack, Paddy Boland, Declan Mullen(1-5), David Malynn(0-3), Danny Digan(0-6) Stephen Darcy, Dude McCormack(0-2), Brian Clarke(0-2), James Geoghegan, David Mulen(0-1). St Malachy’s 2-16
Our poor run of results continued in Castletown on Tuesday evening. Although a much improved performance on our championship outing, some of our more established players are still performing way below par. Of course having to field without 6/7 regulars didn’t help.
Darren O’Connell, Dylan Hassett, Eamon Boland, Padraig Fox(0-1), Shane Tone, Paddy Boland, Daniel Boland, Dude McCormack(0-1), David Malynn(0-7), Paddy Malynn, Eoin Carberry, Theo Watts, Barry Fielding, David Tone(0-2), David Mullen(1-1)
09 June 2013
St Mary’s 1-9
We got our first point in this year’s championship in Kilbeggan on Friday night. It took a late, late point, from top scorer David Malynn, to salvage a draw that we scarcely deserved. Eight different scorers would normally suggest a good team performance but unfortunately this was anything but. While we coped reasonably well in defence we seemed totally out of ideas in the forward division, failing to convert plenty of possession into scores. With five points each at half time we expected the game to open up a little in the second period, but with a small pitch and some very fussy officials this never happened. We just had our noses in front midway through the second half when our keeper was adjudged to have stepped back across the line with the ball. However we did manage 4 points in the last ten minutes, with the equalizer going in off the post. One hopes we have got our bad games out of the way and we can push on from here, but a major improvement is required.

We had our 3rd outing in Div2 this evening in Shandona. Unfortunately we still have no points in the bag as the home side had a deserving win 1-12 to 1-4. We will have to show a marked improvement next Friday in Hogan Park against St Marys if we are to make it to the business end of the Championship.

We got the better of neighbours St Josephs on a score of 2-5 to 17 points in Streamstown on Saturday. The opening half was rather a one-sided affair with home side having several chances but failing to register a score. However, two goals at the start of the second half helped them to eat into our 12 point half time advantage but they were unable to get any closer than the 6 point winning margin.
