Rosemount National School caters for boys and girls of the parish area from age four to twelve years. At present there are 125 children on the school roll. There are five classroom teachers, a Special Education Teacher, a Resource Teacher, two Special Needs Assistants and a school secretary on staff.
The aim of our school is to provide a Christian, caring, learning environment, which facilitates the nurturing of each pupil's full educational potential. The achievement of this aim informs all of the planning processes and activities which occur in our school. Teachers and parents are partners in the children's education, with co-operation and communication between home and school being vital ingredients in the educational process.
Over the time spent at our school the children progress through eight classes or grades starting with Junior Infants then Senior Infants and proceeding from First through to Sixth class. Each teacher teaches a combination of classes in his / her classroom. School starts at 9.20 am and finishes at 3.00 pm. There is a small break (10 minutes) at eleven o clock and a longer one (30 minutes) at 12.30. The school has a healthy eating food policy thus encouraging children to bring sandwiches, fruit and natural drinks in their lunch boxes, sweets, crisps and sugary drinks are prohibited. The children wear a school uniform on normal days and on PE days a school tracksuit. The tractsuit bears the school crest. The design of the crest was a task set as part of the Year 2000 Millennium to do list between pupils and staff. Fortunately inspiration struck now former teacher Mrs Murray and her children in Fourth Class at the time when they combined two local features on the crest that we hold with affection and respect in thinking of our area. These are the hill of Cnoc Aiste and the Irish language name of our area Bhaile an Bhric Oig (translation the town of the Little Trout).
Our school curriculum includes: Languages, English and Irish, Mathematics, Social, environmental and scientific education, Arts education (including visual arts, music and drama), Physical education, Social, personal and health education. We teach the Alive O Religion Education Programme in school, this includes sacramental preparation with parental participation for Communion and Confirmation during Second and Sixth classes respectively.
Our school motto is “Learning is fun and for all ” Older children are encouraged to care for and lead the younger ones in play at school break times. The children have a lively interest in sport of all codes. This is encouraged by teacher’s own work and complemented by a visiting Gaelic football and Rugby coaching service. Swimming lessons for all from age seven upwards taught by staff at nearby Clara Swimming pool are a feature of activities during the summer term. A three day away activity holiday in Delphi Adventure Center Co.Mayo is a newly established treat for the children in Sixth Class as they leave our school.
The construction of the present building began in 1934 and children first moved to it in September 1936, a refurbishment and extension to the building was completed in 1989.Presently the school board have undertaken development of a new playground area behind the school. Under the Department of Education’s devolved grant initiative the Board of Management is also in the process of building three new classrooms to replace old prefab temporary accommodation.
