9th June

With promotion to Div 4 of the league already secured, our junior team travelled to TEG Cusack Park Mullingar last Friday evening to take on Shandonagh in the Div 5 league final. It was a perfect evening for football and both sets of supporters were treated to a very enjoyable game with both teams playing an attractive style of play. Shandonagh started the brightest and put 1.04 on the scoreboard in the opening few minutes. Our lads grew more into the game, and some well taken scores from David Fox, Lorcan Daly, Padraig Geoghegan , Shane Tone , and Richie O’Brien got us back in the game. We went in at half time level, and with it all to play for. In the second half our lads began to dominate, our defense was brilliant throughout, our midfielders ran themselves to a standstill, and our forwards were working very well as a unit. A penalty and a point from play by Ben Cox got us in the lead. From there we kicked on and finished strong with scores from David Fox, Lorcan Daly and Cathal Daly to give us the win by six points. After the game the cup was presented to our team captain Paidi Keenan. The final score was Rosemount 1.20 to Shandonagh’s 2.11. Well done lads on a great win, and league campaign

June 25, 2018

Gaa: We were invited to attend the Eoin Miller Memorial 7 a-side tournament run by Ballinagore Gaa last Saturday. In what was a very well ran tournament, the weather was kind to everyone on the day which added to a great days sporting action. We had wins over Loughnavalley, Tyrellspass and St Malachy’s in the group stage and went on to defeat St Joseph’s in the semi final and Kilbeggan in the final. Afterwards our captain Dude McCormack was presented with the winners plaque. Many thanks to Ballinagore Gaa and to the Miller family for inviting us.

We travelled to Tyrellspass last Monday night to take on the home side In round one of this years JFC. It was a topsy turvy affair with both sides enjoying periods of dominance throughout. Tyrellspass started well and kicked the opening there scores of the game. Our lads settled into the game with a good score from Shane Tone. We began to pick up some more ball around midfield but we struggled to take our chances in front of goal. We ended up going in half time down by 8 points and with some work to do in the second half . With scores badly needed in the second half, the lads started to dig deep and were rewarded. Firstly we struck for two well taken goals by Padraig Nestor and Paidi Keenan after a strong run forward, as well some fine scores from Sean Pettit. Heading into the last five minutes our lads were within touching distance of the lead. Unfortunately, Tyrellspass held out, after a huge effort our lads just fell short. Final score was Tyrellspass 1:14 to Rosemount’s 2:09. Hard luck lads.

Gaa: As we head towards the end of our ACFL Div 1 campaign , we travelled to Kinnegad to play Milltownpass last Monday. Due to players on holidays, injuries, county commitments, a fairly depleted side took the field and came against a well drilled Milltownpass side who were fighting for survival in the league. It was Milltownpass who had the better of the early exchanges. With county panelist Finbar Coyne in there ranks , he proved to be a handful and lead the charge from the front . Having missed a couple of early chances we began to settle with the lively Lorcan Daly leading the charge. We kicked a couple of points which was followed by a well taken goal by Theo Watts. Milltownpass then kicked back into gear , and were taking most chances that came there way in front of goal. We went in at half time seven points down , and with a lot of work to do in the second half , we saw a very positive response from the lads. Boidu  Sayeh kicked a king range free, Lorcan Daly kicked a fantastic long range point to keep up in the game . Having got a couple of scores to get us back in the game , Milltownpass then struck two goals in quick succession heading into the last few minutes. The lads tried there hardest , but in the end we just came up short by two points.
We now play Coralstown Kinnegad in our last game which is at home.

Best of luck to Ben Cox, Sean Pettit, Padraig Geoghegan, Plunkett Maxwell and the Westmeath u20’s who will play in the Leinster Championship quarter final this weekend having defeated Longford last weekend.

ACFL Div 5: Our Div 5 kept there good league run going with a well earned win vs Castledaly last Friday evening. Rain before hand made playing conditions very difficult , and a scrappy first half saw Castledaly take the lead early on and took there chances to lead 1.07 to 0.3 points at half time. Our lads reassessed at the break and quickly set about taking control of the game . We began the second half with a goal , Damien Boland made a strong run forward , and ended up taking the final pass to finish to the net . David Fox kicked two more frees , before Shane Tone scored our all important second goal . Two more frees from David Fox as well as points from Padraig Nestor and David Fox again saw us run out winners by 2.14 to 1.10. We play Mullingar Shamrocks in our final last game , a win will see us promoted to Div 4. Well done lads on a good win.

Hard luck to Boidu Sayeh , Eoin Carberry and the Westmeath senior footballers who take were defeated by Armagh last Saturday in the Qualifiers, and Best of luck to Ben Cox, Sean Pettit, Padraig Geoghegan, Plunkett Maxwell and the Westmeath u20’s who take on Longford this weekend in the Leinster Championship.

ACFL Div 1: We played Castledaly in the Div 1 league last Sunday morning in sweltering conditions in the park. Minus a couple of regulars our lads had to dig deep to gain the win. We started brightly and caused the castledaly defence plenty of problems. Two fine scores from Deccie Mullen and David McCormack got us off the mark , and was first followed by a well taken goal by David McCormack following a strong run . Castledaly started to pick up some more ball in an attacking sense , and there corner forward Daniel Heavin kicked a fine long range point as well as two frees. Castledaly’s ability to convert there frees was key to keeping them in the game , and this was particularly the way in the second half. As the game wore on the intensity grew  both teams were competing hard for every ball. Deccie Mullen kicked a fine point off his right foot, as while castledaly kept plugging away, our lads ran out very deserving winners by 3 points in the end . It is two more points in the bag which puts us second in the table. Well done lads on a good win. We play milltownpass this weekend in our second last game of the campaign.

Well done to Plunkett Maxwell and the Westmeath Hurlers who made it 3 wins from 3 defeating Antrim to qualify for the final game of the Joe McDonagh Cup last weekend.

Best of luck to Boidu Sayeh , Eoin Carberry and the Westmeath senior footballers who take on Armagh this Saturday in the Qualifiers.

30th May

ACFL Div 1: We welcomed Mullingar Shamrocks to the park last Saturday evening for our latest league outing. After a good win and performance the previous round vs The Downs where we collected two points , our lads set about looking for two more.  Our lads started brightly , and had the better of the early exchanges. We threatened right from the off with Deccie Mullen getting us going kicking a fine long range point off his right foot. There was real intensity in the game from both sides from start to finish, and it was end to end with Mullingar playing a high tempo game as well. Deccie Mullen kicked a free, but Mullingar responded with a point from play and two more from frees to leave the game eagerly poised at half time. We came out the second half , and struck what we thought was the important score when a long ball by Shane Tone found Davey Tone in space , he then turned his man and finished to the bottom of the net . Mullingar like all good teams looked to respond immediately, they scored a fantastic goal as well as kicking two frees to get themselves back in the game. They then hit a killer blow themselves with former Westmeath player Donal O’Donoghue finding space in our box to finish to the back of the net to put Mullingar one point in front with time up. It was last chance saloon for our lads, we won possession taking the ball down the field , we were patient and eventually found Sean Pettit in space who fired over the equalizing point with the last kick to leave it a draw match in the end 1.11 to Mullingar’s 2.08.

ACFL Div 5: On Sunday last our Div 5 team took on Tubberclair in what was a crunch battle in the race for promotion to div 4. It was a tight , physical affair , with difficult playing conditions due to rain before the game. We got the perfect start with a fine goal by Ben Cox after five minutes. This was quickly followed up with a point from play by Cathal Byrne after a strong run forward. Tubberclair to be fair kept coming at us and caused us plenty of problems. We went in at half time 2 points down, but we were still very much in the game. The second started with both sides trading scores. Lorcan Daly kicked a great score from far out on the left , to keep us in the game. Sean Pettit entered the fray , and kicked a fine long range point, as well as a free to level the game with five minutes to go. The introduction of Shane Tone, Kieran Hanevy and Cathal Daly gave us the extra edge in the last five minutes. Darren Connell stood up to slot over a 45 , and David Fox finished the game off by kicking two long range points into the wind to give us a 3 point win by 1.13 to 1.10.  Well done lads on two very good performances.

Other news:ACFL Div 1: Wednesday last, Tyrellspass was the venue for our latest round in the Div 1 league. After a strong performance the previous weekend, our lads were keen to collect two further points. Tyrellspass showed why they are in contention for the Flanagan Cup most years and there experience showed in this game. From the off Tyrellspass set up very defensively , and with 13 players behind the ball they made it very difficult for us to break them down. In saying that , our lads dug in , never gave up and we’re probably the better team over the 60 minutes, but we struggled to break through the Tyrellspass defense at times. Tyrellspass we’re gaining frees inside there own half and with county star Ger Egan in there ranks , he duly obliged, kicking a couple of f ine scores from distance. Our lads kept in the game with a Ben Cox point from play , as well as a Deccie Mullen free. We went in at half time , still in the game and down by two points. The second half started very much like the first , both sides traded points, and as the game headed into the last 15 minutes if began to get scrappy. Boidu Sayeh popped up to kick a fine score off his left foot to leave two between the sides. In the end Tyrellspass hung on for a win by 0.10 to 0.07.

We played Garrycastle last Saturday night in Garrycastle. It was nip and tuck for most of the game, and with the playing surface not in ideal condition the game turned messy at times. ACFL Div 1 league – Our seniors kicked off the year with a two point win over Athlone last Friday night, in a wet and windy affair. Athlone started the brighter and took the imitative , but our lads stuck at it to the end. We kicked on after this and finished the first half with a well taken goal by Ben Cox after a good flowing move. Points in the second half by David McCormack and Plunkett Maxwell kept us in front. Conditions deteriorated rapidly with the wind and rain causing the game to turn sloppy. In the end , we held out for a two point win in what was a very Workman like performance by the team. Well done lads on a great win.

Paidi O’Se Tournament 2018, Our seniors and supporters headed south to Kerry last weekend to take part in the annual Paidi O’Se Tournament. What followed was one of the most unbelievable experiences we could of ever had, in a beautiful part of the country. On Saturday last , we received a bye in round one, and defeated Milltown Castlemaine of Kerry in our second game. This put in a final vs Dingle on Sunday. Both teams went at it for 60 minutes and couldn’t be separated. 10 minutes extra time followed , and with one minute to go Lorcan Daly stepped up to kick the winning point from 35 yards outside of his left foot. Dingle had a chance to equalize from a free, but missed , resulting in a win for our lads by one point. The lads played there absolute hearts out in heavy conditions. We are the first Westmeath team to win the cup , and as a result we can look forward to competing again in the tournament next year. We would like to thank Padraig O’Se and his family who inviting us down to take part , as well as our own committee and supporters who made this such a  great weekend away for everyone.

Rosemount were well represented in this weekends hurling finals in TEG Cusack Park. Liam O’Neill, Cormac Palmer, Padraig Nestor, and Peter Fielding were part of the Fr Daltons side that won the Intermediate final yesterday, while David ‘Dude’ McCormack and Plunkett Maxwell were part of the Castletown Geoghegan side who won the Senior final today. Well done men.

It was a very busy week on the Gaa front with two senior and one junior championship games being played. Hogan Park Moate was the place to be last Tuesday night, for our eagerly awaited clash with neighbours Castledaly in round 4 of the SFC. With both teams on 4 points, a win here was massive for both clubs. Like the last day vs Caulry we started very well , and took the game to Castledaly in the first half with the aid of a light breeze. We scored our first two points courtesy of Dee Dee McCormack and Boidu Sayeh after two great runs forward. Another sweeping moved followed five minutes later, resulting in Deccie Mullen being brought down inside the area, referee Barry Kelly then blew the whistle and awarded us a penalty. It was a significant moment in the first half, but unfortunately we did not take the opportunity, Deccie Mullen stepped up, had the Castledaly keeper beaten but the ball came back off the crossbar. From the resulting play, we managed to tag on another point. Castledaly replied with a couple of scores from poor frees we conceded. Kevin Stone and keeper Jordan Nugent slotted them away easily to keep them in the game. We finally managed to get the all-important goal just before half time. Theo Watts got on a pass and off loaded nicely to put Deccie Mullen who ran through and finished to the back of the net. A long direct ball into Dude McCormack resulted in a point off his left foot. This left us in a good position heading towards half time , there was also two inspirational points by Full back Andy McCormack who made two runs forward which resulted in two points for him, one off his left and the other off his right. Half time score left us leading 1.10 to 0.05.
Castledaly emerged from the dressing room in the Second half a different team and started brightly with a score from another free. The intensity and physicality of the game had increased significantly at this stage, and it turned scrappy at times.
Castledaly launched a long ball into their full forward line, the ball broke their way and they scored a goal ten mins into the second half. This left 4 points between the teams. We responded well, Boidu made a searing run forward from inside his own half. And slotted over a point off his left foot. It was tit for tat after this with both sides scoring points. In the end we held ot for a four point win. It was a battle and a half in the second half but the lads can take confidence that we got though it and came out the the other side with a win.

Final score: Rosemount 1.13 to Castledaly’s 1.09.

Team: Eoin Carberry, Damien Carroll, Andy McCormack, Padraog Nestor , Darragh Healy, Darren King, Boidu Sayeh, David ‘DD’ McCormack, Enda Boland, Plunkett Maxwell, Theo Watts, Deccie Mullen, Sean Pettit, Cathal Daly, David ‘Dude’ McCormack.  Subs used – Luke Kelly, Israel IIunga, Shane Tone, TJ Foxe.
We then welcomed Tyrellspass to the park last Thursday night in the JFC. A depleted side took the field, with work commitments, a grad, and injuries taking its tole we still managed to put in a decent performance, in what was a tightly contested game. The first half was just this, with both sides trading points. Goals by Stephen Darcy & John Keenan kept us in the game for long periods, but Tyrellspass just did enough in the final ten minutes in the end to win by 5 points. Final Score was a win for Tyrellspass by 3.12 to 3.07. Team: Darren O’Connell, Robbie Healy, John Keane, Eoin Fagan, Peter Elliffe, Paidi Keenan, Aaron Farrell, Lorcan Daly, Stephen Darcy, Dan Digan, David Fox, Matthew Lynam, Damien Byrne, Richie O’Brien, John Keenan. Subs used: Vinny Cox & Liam O’Neill.

Our final game of the week and in the SFC took place last Saturday night on a dry and warm evening in Tubberclair where we took on Maryland. The lads knew our fate was in our own hands, a win was required and in knowing this the lads took the initiative from the throw in and never looked like giving it up. We opened our account after five minutes with a fantastic long range point out on the right by DD McCormack. A sweeping move down the field resulted in a fisted goal by Enda Boland. At this stage we were in control of the game and keeping Maryland’s attack at bay with tigerish defending. Our second gold came half way , the ball broke in the 21 yard line and Deccie Mullen hit a low soccer style shot low and hard to the left hand corner of the net. Two points by Dude and Sean Pettit finished the scoring from the first half with one point from each of them from frees to leave the half  time score with us winning by 2.04 to 0.04. The Second half started and at times was a bit scrappy. Dude stated off again kicking two frees. The next couple of minutes brought some hard Physical exchanges with Maryland now looking to get something out of the game. Our lads did not stand off, and never gave an inch up, especially around the middle third where DD McCormack, Padraig Nestor, Boidu Sayeh and Darren King were having an exceptional game. In the end a point from way out on the left by Boidu sealed a fine performance and the win.
Final score: Rosemount 2.10 Maryland 0.08.
Team: Eoin Carberry, Damien Carroll, Andy McCormack, Luke Kelly, Boidu Sayeh, Darren King, Padraig Nestor, David ‘DD’ McCormack, Israel IIunga, Plunkett Maxwell, Theo Watts, David ‘Dude’ McCormack, Enda Boland, Sean Pettit. Subs used- TJ Fox, Shane Tone.
